Democracy and Voting: Challenges and Milestones in the Fight for Voting Rights

This course will be a historical and present-day review of voting and voting rights. Students will explore the definition of democracy and will understand how voting is a critical characteristic of our country’s government. Students will engage in thinking about voter requirements and will learn about stories of those who were granted and denied the right to vote. Topics of study will include the 15th Amendment, women’s suffrage, the March on Selma, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Indigenous voting rights, and the repeal of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 (the Shelby decision).
