Enrichment and Activity
Summer Programs 2020

BB&N is planning to offer remote learning programs for both BB&N new and current families as well as non-BB&N families during Summer 2020. This is in response to the need for students to have access to both activities and educational enrichment opportunities.

BB&N would like to offer faculty driven programs that include, academic enrichment classes, classes that are oriented to projects and fun activities and health, wellness and fitness programs.

While most courses will run for 1-2 hours a day in either one or two week sessions, some courses require different scheduling. Please make notes of time/duration during registration.

STEM Legos

Program: STEM Legos with Mr Magnuson LS Learning Specialist

Description: The Russian Short Story: Pushkin to Chekhov — Writing & Literature. While the Russians are well-known for their enormous, ponderous tomes (think Dostoevsky and Tolstoy!), a countercurrent of rich, polished incisive short stories has also flowed, one that has influenced American writers from Fitzsgerald to Hemingway to Cornel West. We will explore these masterpieces of 19th-century Russian short fiction and the culture that surrounded them, covering one story per day.

Description: Food waste is a major global issue with nearly ⅓ of all food produced for humans left uneaten each year. Learn about the challenges of food waste and use creative problem solving to propose solutions. We will work together in teams to brainstorm ideas and present a plan of action. Together we will use a six-step process that can be applied to problem solving for any global issue.

Description: All you need to know on boating Laws and Responsibilities set to age appropriate classes. The class would educate you on Massachusetts laws governing boating and provides general information about safe vessel operation on your road to boating fun along with basic maintenance, boat handling and an intro to fishing component. Participants will develop confidence in all of the basic and some advanced aspects of boating and fishing to grow their knowledge on the water. Coach McLaughlin is a US Coast Guard Licensed and Insured Captain and owner of a Charter Fishing Company and Fishing School.

Description: In this course students would be led on a series of writing exercises that teach them how to look more closely and describe human/animal subjects, nature, their neighborhood, their belongings — the things of everyday life that often go unexamined but carry immense weight in our lived experience. This is a great course for students interested in writing more textured, sophisticated fiction, creative nonfiction, and personal essays.

Spreadsheets with US Math

Description: Google Sheets as a platform, students will start with the basics of spreadsheets and use of “formulas,” and then explore and utilize various tools and formatting options. They will be given problems to solve using spreadsheets and then create a unique spreadsheet using collected for researched data.

Description: This class will unlock the antique world as revealed through its architecture, sculpture, and decorative arts. The forms and motifs of these works comprise an enduring body of visual reference and indeed, the foundation of our artistic literacy . The class will examine the most important works of antiquity chronologically. Students will learn the terminology and interrelationship of the various media and forms. Every session, students will embark on a virtual field trip to museums and archeological sites around the world!

We will emphasize telling factual stories in a compelling and vivid manner. This class will be workshop-based with students reading and commenting on each other’s work in a positive and collaborative way.

Genre: How to Write an Arguable Thesis

Description: What is the most important part of essay writing? Your thesis. Without a rock-solid thesis, your essay will not stand up, no matter how strong your writing or evidence is. In this one-week course we will use writing exercises to learn what makes a thesis excellent, poor, or just satisfactory and how with any essay you can produce a compelling thesis that you can build your argument and evidence around.

Description: This class will be focused on strengthening Algebra 2 skills. Topics will include lines, quadratics, polynomials, rationals, exponentials, and logarithms. In a low pressure virtual classroom, students will wipe away the cobwebs and fill in some gaps that linger from their year in Algebra 2. The goal is to give the students a boost in their confidence as they head into their next math class, whether that’s Geometry or Precalculus. All that’s required is a pencil and some paper.

Lacrosse Stick Skills

Program: Lacrosse Stick Skills (boys and girls welcome)

Grades: 5-7

Description: Are you a beginner or intermediate lacrosse player? Do you want to have better stick skills? Then sign up for this one week class with Ms. Saris! She will help you to build your repertoire of tricks and drills so that you can be a force to be reckoned with during your next season. You will come away with skills to work on all summer long. You will need a lacrosse stick (boys and girls both welcome), a lacrosse ball, and a wall to throw the ball against (concrete side of a building, a chimney, etc). Consider taking the course with a sibling or friend so that you can pass back and forth (way more fun than a wall). Ms. Saris played collegiate Division I lacrosse and has coached high school lacrosse for several years in Connecticut.

Agility Bootcamp

Description: Do you want to be a quicker, more agile athlete? Join Ms. Saris in this two week agility bootcamp. You will work on lateral movement, acceleration and deceleration, and change of direction. You will need an open space (a backyard, a field, a parking lot, etc) and cones. Ms. Saris played collegiate Division I lacrosse and has 10+ years of coaching experience.

Baking Yummy Treats

Description: Let’s have some fun in the kitchen while baking yummy treats for you and your family! Description: This workshop is specifically catered towards those who have never taken a writing workshop centered around a prompt. You can write poetry, personal essay (expository), narrative, play, etc. We will spend time free writing each day around the theme, and then use class time to share our writing and get oral feedback from peers.

Public Speaking

Program: Public Speaking–Writing and Delivering a Humorous or Persuasive Speech

Description: Are you a burgeoning activist? An aspiring politician or comedian? A future leader in the business world? No matter what your goals may be, you probably need to know how to wield rhetoric to your advantage! In this course we will watch successful speeches by activists, students, and politicians and will talk about what aspects of form and delivery help make a speech more powerful. Each participant will then craft their own speech and will workshop that speech with Ms. Getchell and some guest lecturers/experienced public speakers. We will also work on delivery and hone each of our personal oratory styles!

Program: Parliamentary Debate

Description: Want to win arguments and discuss current events? Or maybe you’re trying to improve your on-the-spot thinking and analysis? Interested in finding out what we do on the BB&N debate team? Then this summer parliamentary debate course is for you! This course is designed for all experience levels (from those who have never participated in an organized debate to those who have competed in international tournaments). We will discuss the finer points of parliamentary debate (the style of impromptu debate in which the ISL schools most frequently debate) and how to build an argument in the short ten minutes allotted in this form. We will then engage in many rounds of fun and topical debates and work on our delivery skills.

Knitting

Program: Knitting with Anna Bloxham After School Teacher/Summer Camp Specialty Counselor

Description: Learn to knit, and complete a project you’ll actually want to wear! You’ll learn the surprisingly simple principles of knitting (there are just two basic stitches!), and will walk away with a completed beanie – as well as the knowledge and skills to follow knitting patterns and dive into future projects. You’ll make your own design choices along the way, personalize the fit to make it just right for you, and discover the calm, creativity and satisfaction that knitting offers. Knitting has mental health benefits, and is just plain fun to do – you’ll never be bored again. Students will need a set of circular knitting needles, yarn, yarn sewing needle and ruler/tape measure.

Description: Introduction to Digital Photography

Photographs – we view them, take them, share them and post them all the time. In this course, we will explore the principles that underpin successful images, and apply them in daily photo projects. Regardless of the camera you’re using (be it DSLR or smartphone), you’ll learn to take advantage of its functions in the name of your own creativity. Come ready to discover, share and discuss. You’ll walk away with a rich understanding of the power of this visual language, and the ability to make your own images shine. Students will need a digital camera or smartphone, and a Google account (for use with Google Photos).

Baking

Description: I would love to keep on baking/cooking with the students and teach them more about measurements as well as following directions in a sequential form. We would make recipes that were simple and clear step by step directions. Parents would also need to be around in order to assist with the oven and any tools needed.

Description: This course will set you up to read The Republic on your own. We will read excerpts from Books 5-7 where Plato’s main character in this dialogue, Socrates, sets out his “city in speech.” Here Plato addresses questions such as: what is justice? what is knowledge? We will read Alan Bloom’s translation: The Republic of Plato, Second Edition. This reading material will be available at no cost online, or you can purchase your own hard copy or Kindle version via Amazon or other outlet. Nightly reading will be about a half hour or so with guiding questions. There will be absolutely optional enrichment reading distinct from the assigned material for those who are or may become Plato junkies.

Intro to Public Health

Description: The objective of this course will be to increase proficiency in Spanish in order for students who have completed Spanish 2 to gain more skills and confidence before entering Spanish 3 or 3 Honors. Students will learn ways to use the subjunctive, formal commands, and perfect tenses; develop their vocabulary and listening skills, by using a variety of authentic materials including articles on current events, fictional stories, and various media resources.

Summer Writing Workshop

Description: This week-long course will engage rising fourth and fifth graders in becoming more creative, convincing, and compelling writers. Students will cycle through the writing process as they plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish an opinion-based piece. Students will also receive instructor feedback through the Google Classroom platform and weekly 1-1 check-ins. Students may sign up for a week at a time or participate in all sessions offered as prompts will change from week to week.

Unlocking Infectious Disease

Program: Unlocking Infectious Disease with US Science Teacher Ms Borking

Description: This class will be based on infectious diseases e.g. HIV and malaria. Students will learn about a variety of infectious diseases from bacterial to viral to parasitic. There will be aspects of epidemiology, immunology and treatments available. Students will be expected to use a range of resources and there will be a project component to the course. Rubrics will be provided to measure student success along with peer feedback and reflection. Data analysis will also be used.

Description: Our brains are amazing and do many remarkable things, be it recognizing pictures, making sense of language or playing games. Understanding how a network of neurons is able to accomplish these remarkable feats has been a big challenge for scientistsThis two week course will be a gentle introduction to computer science and artificial intelligence. You will learn the elements of programming and then use this knowledge to experiment with AI systems like ‘deep neural networks’.
